SOMA West Rollup Mural Project 

The SOMA West Rollup Mural Project is an ongoing mural project to enliven one of the ubiquitous architectural features of our neighborhood: the rolling garage door. A nod to the neighborhood’s industrial past, the humble rolling garage door can be found all over SOMA. By focusing on this unique characteristic of the neighborhood, we hope to tie the district together through the artwork of bay area artists.

The mural theme and design will be agreed upon by the artist, property owner, and SWCBD.

Shortlisted artists will be matched with a property and invited to submit a rough sketch of their proposed design. Even if you are not selected for this project, by filling out this form you will be entered into SOMA West Community Benefit Districts' database and could be considered for future public art opportunities within the district. 

This is an ongoing project, and artists will be selected based on door availability and owner preference. There is no deadline to submit your materials but we encourage you to submit your work to be considered from the beginning of our project rollout! 

Payment terms: 

  • Small doors: $1,000 - $1,500
  • Medium doors: $1,500 - $2,500
  • Large doors: $2500 - $3,000 
  • The Artist will receive a stipend for their materials based on their project proposal, and SOMA West will cover the cost of equipment that needs to be rented for larger doors. 

Other Perks: 

  • Robust social media campaign to promote the murals, the artists, and the district as an arts destination
    Potential future events like walking tours, gallery show of photographed doors, etc.
  • Optional Merchandizing Opportunity: SOMA West CBD will be hiring a professional photographer to document the project, and these images can be used to print custom limited edition merchandise (T-shirts, hats, tote bags, etc.) Artists can price and sell these items and keep the majority of the profits. SOMA West CBD will recoup costs associated with printing and merchandise purchases once sale has been made. We hope that this can help to encourage young artists to develop their marketing and entrepreneurial skills by minimizing the overhead costs associated with reproducing their work.
