11th and Natoma Naming: Survey is now Closed. Please stay tuned for updates regarding the future name! 


The San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department in partnership with SOMA Community Organizations invites proposals from the community for the naming of a new park located within western SOMA at the intersection of 11th and Natoma Street. This initiative aims to involve the community in selecting a meaningful and appropriate name that resonates with the park's location, historical significance, or honors an individual's contributions to the South of Market community.


Criteria and Requirements for Submission

1. Slide Presentation: Proposers should prepare one or two slides detailing general information about the suggested name and why the individual or concept should be considered. Include reasons highlighting historical significance, relevance to the park's location or design, or an individual's impactful service to the community. Prepare a one minute presentation to introduce and present nominations for park names. Submit your slide proposal as a PDF and short narrative by February 12th, 2024 at 4:00 PM PST to erica@swcbd.org 


Process: 

  1.  Submit your proposal per the instructions outlined above.
  2. Community Meeting #1 (February 13th,  2024, 6-7:30pm): Presentation of Nominations. Prepare one slide and a couple of lines (and to speak on for under one minute to introduce and present nominations for park names.
  3. Community-wide Survey #1 (February 13th, 2024): Immediately after presentations, we will conduct a community-wide survey to gather input on the proposed names.
  4.  Community Meeting #2 (March 7th, 2024): Live Discussion on Survey Results. Present and discuss survey results to gauge community preferences.
  5. Community-wide Survey #2 (April 2024): we will conduct a community-wide survey to present the top names discussed at the previous meeting.  
  6. Final Decision (TBD): The final decision will be based on survey results, input from community leadership organizations, and SF Department of Recreation and Park based on the process. The decision-making process aims to consider broad community support and engagement.

Selection Criteria: 

  • Non-person Names: Reflecting neighborhood history, park location, or design characteristics.
  • Person/Persons: Honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the South of Market community, and who have not been previously honored in public naming, and have been deceased  at least two years prior. 

Proposals must adhere to these criteria and the outlined process for consideration. Submissions will be evaluated based on community support, relevance, historical significance, and impact on the community.
