SOMArts New Exhibit "A Soft Place To Land"

Category   Art Exhibitions

On Friday, July 19th, our neighbors at SOMArts gathered artists and creatives alike for “A Soft Place to Land.” Envisioned by SOMArts’ Gallery Director Carolina Quintanilla in close collaboration with 8 participating artists.

A Soft Place to Land boldly centers joy as a relational and embodied practice, one that deserves to be archived and passed on.

In the greater news and across the nation and the world, we're witnessing an alarming rise in legislative actions that threaten the rights of millions of people. In order to prepare our community for what is to come, this multidisciplinary exhibition invites audiences to connect with our ánimos—a Spanish word that refers to the state of our spirit and a term of encouragement—as an act of survival and care.

The artists pose central questions: What lifts your spirits? What would reclaiming a home base rooted in joy look and feel like? What evidence are we leaving behind to ensure we can always reconnect to it? Through this exhibition, those who visit are encouraged to find and cherish the elements that uplift us, transforming them into lasting beacons of joy and strength. Through the participation of Lara Aburamadan, Alyssa Aviles, Alexa Burrell, Paola de la Calle, Gericault De La Rose, Sarah Smith, Tosha Stimage, and Malaya Tuyay we are truly able to know what a soft place to land really looks like.
